Where was Boat Story filmed?
It’s been a huge success for the BBC, attracting 3 million viewers along with rave reviews from both the national press (including this glowing write-up from The Guardian) and in industry publications like Broadcast.
The six-part drama – about two strangers whose lives become intertwined (and very complicated!) when they discover a boatload of washed-up cocaine – was written by the brothers Jack and Harry Williams (Back to Life, The Tourist, Baptiste and The Missing), and forces us to consider our own response to such a valuable, yet illegal find.
Apart from the fact that its narrative and dark comedy genius put it on a level with the films of Tarantino and the Coen Brothers (well observed, The Guardian!), what makes this series stand out is that it was filmed in locations across Yorkshire.
Which Yorkshire filming locations were used for boat story?
When filming for the series began at the start of the year, the Teeside Gazette was quick to report sightings of the show’s cast and crew on Redcar beach. Leeds Live, meanwhile, shared information given to residents of the South Yorkshire market town, Selby, where a small road called Micklegate was closed for 2 days.
The i newspaper also wrote about the Yorkshire filming locations used in the BBC One comedy thriller, noting the crew’s affection for the architecture in Halifax.
Which locations in Leeds were used in Boat Story?
As revealed by in an article by Screen Yorkshire, “Leeds filming locations include: East Leeds Airport, The Core Shopping Centre, The Rodley Barge Pub, The Owl Pub in Rodley, Holbeck Cemetery, Woodhall Hotel Wetherby and the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, Calverley”.
But that’s not all. The house used as the home of Boat Story’s henchman, Guy (Craig Fairbrass), is also in Leeds – and it’s one of the locations in our library.
The Leeds location used as a character’s home
We got the brief from the show’s producers back in February. They needed a residential location in Leeds with an open plan kitchen/dining/living room, to shoot some scenes showing Guy going about his ‘normal’ daily life. And it had to be within easy reach of the crew’s base at Versa Studios.
Very quickly, the team settled on location 2767, a large detached architectural family home in North Leeds. Head over to its profile page on our website and you can see a gallery of images of the house, and even take a 360 virtual tour!
It’s a popular location and we’ve been able to bring the owners all kinds of shoots since partnering with them over 4 years ago, from TV ads and shows to fashion and furniture shoots.
